Traveling by train through the island is a great and cheap way, if you have time… You feel like in the US at Wild Wild West period, leaning through the window, getting down for a while to buy a beedee cigarette or water bottle when train stop in the coco fields for no reason, talking with neighbours in 3 Rd class compartment, smelling all flavours from the open window. From Matara you can go to Colombo, Kandy in the mountains within 3 hours of a pure delight journey. Our railway station is working like 70 years ago, same way to control, sell and help passengers to find their way.
