The Prefab by Wright in Bayside

1001 W Jonathan Ln, Bayside, WI 53217, États-Unis

Nested in the middle of other houses, this small house has been designed by Frank Lloyd Wright himself ! It’s part of a project called the Prefab houses : Wright’s design was for a single story, L-shaped home with a pitched-roof bedroom wing joining a flat-roofed living-dining-kitchen area centered on a large masonry fireplace. To limit costs, Wright used standard Andersen windows and Pella doors, and designed the prefab to be built using standard sheets of plywood, Masonite and drywall. The exterior was to be painted Masonite with horizontal redwood battens attached, though the house could also be built of stone or concrete block, or partially faced with stone. L’une des maisons du projet Prefab #1, engagé par Wright et Marshall Erdmann pour diminuer le coût des maisons. Source Wikipedia.

Prairie / Usonian style in Fox Point

7111 N Barnett Ln, Fox Point, WI 53217, États-Unis

Unfortunately, we don’t see very well this house on my pictures because of its long private driveway. It was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the Prairie Style but it also embodies Wright’s Usonian ideals for low-maintenance buildings. It is built of buff-colored concrete block and cypress, neither of which requires paint or plaster. The roof is covered with hand split cedar shakes and has wide overhangs. A covered walkway leads from the end of the house to the garage, forming an “L” shape.

Bock house – Prairie Style

2420 N Terrace Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53211, États-Unis

This house is really astonishing. Build in 1916, it looks impregnable, stern and austère at first glimpse. But look closely at all the details, sculptures, glass panes & windows… This is a masterpiece of the Prairie style. No tours available.

The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church

9400 W Congress St, Wauwatosa, WI 53225, États-Unis

Very futuristic Greek Orthodox Church designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Group tours on Tuesday and Friday but you are also welcome to the mass at 9.30am on Sunday to discover the inside. http://www.annunciationwi.org/ Approche de nouveau très futuriste pour cette église orthodoxe qui m’a rappellé le théatre rondelle du siège social de SC Johnson. Les tours en groupe sont proposés le mardi et vendredi sur rdv. En revanche, quiconque le souhaite peut s’inviter à la messe du dimanche à 9h30.

Frank Lloyd Wright in Wisconsin/Illinois

209 S La Salle St, Chicago, IL 60604, États-Unis

You know that I am passionate about this great american architect… Today, I was very lucky to be invited by the Frank Lloyd Preservation Trust to visit the Rookery, in the financial district of Chicago. http://cal.flwright.org/tours/rookery

The Rookery – part 1

209 S LaSalle St, Chicago, IL 60603, États-Unis

The Rookery is one of the oldest building in Chicago, build by Burnham and Root right after the great fire and is located in LaSalle Street, considered by many as “the Wall Street of Chicago”. The building was nicknamed the Rookery not only in reference to the crows and pigeons that inhabited its exterior walls, but also because of the shady politicians it housed (former City Hall). By mixing modern building techniques, such as metal framing, fireproofing, elevators and plate glass, together with traditional ones, such as brick facades and elaborate ornamentation, Burnham and Root created a bold architectural statement.

Frank Lloyd Wright's Robie House, 5757 S Woodlawn Ave, Chicago, IL 60637, États-Unis

As a local reporter, when I had the opportunity to visit the Robie House even during a week-end, I couldn’t say no, I was so blessed to be guided inside this “Prairie-style masterpiece”… Thanks FLW Trust !

The Rookery is a Chicago landmark historical building, containing one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s most dramatic interior compositions. Do you remember that it was featured in The Untouchables movie as the police headquarters of Eliot Ness ?

The Rookery – part 4

209 S LaSalle St, Chicago, IL 60603, États-Unis

Among Wright’s most significant alterations was the addition of white marble with Persian-style ornamentation to cover Root’s elaborate wrought iron finishes. It brought enhanced status to the building. Some of Wright’s other changes included incorporating simplified ironwork and adding his trademark style planters and light fixtures. Wright’s work on the Rookery recast the entryway in his Prairie style and added a sense of modernity through his simple but effective lighting design

The Rookery – part 3

209 S LaSalle St, Chicago, IL 60603, États-Unis

A double set of curving, heavily ornamented stairs wind upward from the lobby’s second floor into the building’s interior. A wrap-around balcony on the second floor enhances the feeling of being within the interior of a “clockwork”. Stunning…

The Rookery – part 2

209 S LaSalle St, Chicago, IL 60603, États-Unis

Making prodigious use of light and ornamentation, Root and Burnham designed a central light court to serve as the focal point for the entire building and provide daylight to interior offices. It’s trully a jewel… It’s this part that Frank Lloyd Wright was asked to redesign from 1905 to 1907
